हाथी की सबसे अनोखी चीज उसकी सूँड है। यह उसे पेड़ के तने के चारों ओर लपेटकर पेड़ को जड़ सहित उखाड़ सकता है। माता हथिनी अपनी सूँड का उपयोग करती है तो वह अपनी सूँड से धूल उठाकर फूँक से अपनी पीठ पर बिखेर देती है। मौसम गरम होने पर वह इसका उपयोग फुहारा स्नान के लिए करती है। काम करते समय इससे भारी लट्ठा उठाकर उसे दूर ले जाती है।

हाथी की सूँड मांसपेशियों का पुंज है, किन्तु यह बहुत कोमल भी है। लड़ाई समय, हाथी अपनी सूँड को मोड़कर एक तरफ हटा लेता है।

कुछ लोग सोचते हैं कि जैसे हम किसी नली से पानी पीते हैं. हाथी भी वैसे ही अपनी सूंड का उपयोग पानी सुड़कने के लिए करता है। यह असत्य है कि वह अपनी सूंड में पानी लेकर पानी को अपने मुँह में उड़ेल देता है।
